My last post was about the design process that went in to prototyping a fid (also called a marlinspike) handle. This post shows the real deal! I worked with Shane Marks of Rhino Ropeworks to make this happen. After I was satisfied with my plastic prototype, I had Shapeways 3D print the handle in their Polished Grey Steel Material (a mix of 420 stainless steel infused with 40% bronze). I had it shipped directly to Shane who lives in Australia so I still haven’t gotten my hands on it, but he sent over these photos while he worked on it. I printed the model with a 4mm hole in the bottom to hopefully help with the drilling, but in the end Shane told me that it would have been easier without the hole. The 3D print was delivered with a 3.7mm hole, so the first order of business was to drill out a clean 4mm hole in the bottom.
The next step was to tap the threads. I believe he went with an M6 thread.
After that he made up the spike to match, which required some hand filing to get it to be perfectly flush with the handle.
